Let’s
Explore.

Adventure.

The Compass School’s student journey is comprised of three divisional programs: Early Childhood (PK and Kindergarten), Childhood (Grades 1 - 6), and Adolescence (Grades 7 and 8).

Our student-centered approach to education is designed to nurture curiosity, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of learning. We believe in creating a collaborative and engaging environment where students can actively construct their own knowledge through exploration, experimentation, and real-world application.

Teachers and students build strong, trusting relationships that foster mutual respect and support. Children are encouraged to reflect on their learning, ask thoughtful questions, and engage in high-level problem-solving. Through group projects and community engagement, we also develop essential skills like collaboration, communication, and empathy.

By tailoring our curriculum to each student's age and developmental stage, we ensure that every child has the opportunity to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

TCS Way: More than just a classroom

To truly love learning, every student must approach it their own way.

This is more than our opinion—it’s backed by decades of scientific research. With that research as a guide, we foster a child’s natural curiosity, while also providing them with the structure and guidance they need to grow and progress as students. Our signature learning opportunities provide a well-rounded educational experience that prepares students for future success.

Learning at TCS happens in three different ways: students build skills and understanding in the Foundational Knowledge phase through inquiry-led lessons and intentional direct instruction; in the Deep Dive phase, students pursue their own questions and ideas for two weeks for an immersive research experience; then during a one-week Cultural Investigation phase a couple times a year, students explore beyond the classroom.

In practice, it’s simple: learning at TCS is fun, vigorous, and deeply intellectual.

  • Our Foundational Knowledge program provides a strong foundation for learning through inquiry-led lessons and intentional direct instruction in World Knowledge, Math, and Literacy.

For World Knowledge, each class uses a theme as a launching pad. This is a cross-curricular area of learning that includes elements of culture, science, history, geography, and technology.

At TCS, math is more than just numbers; it's about understanding the underlying concepts - the “why.” Our curriculum is designed to foster a deep-rooted number sense by immersing students in exploratory activities, real-world challenges, and engaging games to develop critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

The TCS Literacy program provides a comprehensive approach to language arts with an integrated curriculum that ensures that students develop a strong foundation in phonics, fluency, comprehension, and writing skills.

  • Our two-week Deep Dive sessions empower students to explore their passions in depth. Building on prior learning, students embark on a journey of discovery, fueled by curiosity and guided by research, hands-on projects, and creative expression. Through this immersive experience, students develop essential skills like time management, problem-solving, and critical thinking while cultivating a love of learning.

Deep Dives foster critical thinking, enhance understanding, and prepare students for advanced learning by delving deeper into topics. A deeper understanding of concepts leads to greater retention and application of knowledge, and a strong foundation of knowledge is essential for future academic success and helps students excel in higher-level courses.

  • Our Cultural Investigations provide students with immersive, week-long opportunities to explore the diverse fabric of Austin. Twice a year, students venture into the heart of our city, connecting with its natural, historical, and cultural landscapes.  Cultural Investigations broaden horizons, foster cultural awareness, and prepare students for global citizenship by exploring different cultures.

From the natural beauty of the Zilker Botanical Garden to the dynamic exhibits at the Bullock Texas State History Museum, students engage with a variety of environments that foster curiosity and critical thinking. They encounter the city's rich history, diverse ecosystems, and artistic expressions, developing a deeper understanding of their community.

Beyond iconic landmarks, students participate in community events, gaining firsthand experience of Austin's vibrant culture and fostering a sense of civic engagement. These investigations cultivate a profound appreciation for the city, inspiring a lifelong curiosity about the world around them.

8:1 student-teacher ratio

Our educators are experts in student-centered education, balancing structured learning with the freedom for young people to use their natural curiosity.

Unique to our dual-grade Discovery classrooms (Grades 1 - 6), in addition to two Anchor Teachers, TCS champions student growth with dedicated Learning Coaches. These mentors provide weekly one-on-one support over four years, helping students reflect, set goals, build positive habits, and unlock their full potential throughout their learning journeys.

creativity and innovation

The Innovation Lab sparks creativity, develops problem-solving skills, and equips students with the skills needed for a technology-driven future.

It is a dynamic space for students to experiment, explore, and develop innovative solutions to real-world challenges. Through hands-on experiences, they learn to identify problems, brainstorm ideas, and test their concepts. This immersive learning environment equips students with the essential skills needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
